The Southern Oregon University Sustainable Farm is an innovative space that seamlessly integrates nature, art, and education to inspire environmental consciousness and promote sustainable practices. The project involved creating a master plan for the farm, to be incorporated into the SOU 10-year master plan. The work included site planning, landscape design of outdoor classrooms, gardens, a wetland boardwalk, and various structures on site. The Thalden pavilion – an open-air structure designed as part of this plan, serves as the focal point and encourages a sense of connection with the surrounding environment. The meandering boardwalk was proposed to strategically wind its way through the wetland area, allowing visitors to explore the unique ecosystem. Interpretive signs are proposed in specific locations along the boardwalk to offer insights into the wetland’s biodiversity, the importance of conservation, and sustainable practices of the farm at SOU. The final phase of construction will include a gateway demonstration garden, outdoor classrooms, and a workspace supporting the local Farm to School program.
